American Lung Association of Arizona 2006 Public Policy
The American Lung Association of Arizona recognizes that public policy change—legislation and regulation—at all levels of government is key to achieving its mission: to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. The American Lung Association of Arizona advocacy program supports government, corporate and community policies to translate that mission into reality.

This Public Policy Agenda identifies major legislative and regulatory issues where the Association has demonstrated leadership or can show leadership in the future. In addition, the American Lung Association of Arizona actively supports the Public Policy Agenda of the national American Lung Association and strives to attain national public policy priorities by influencing Congressional action and decisions of federal agencies.

Tobacco
The ALA of Arizona will support State legislation and regulations, as well as local City/County ordinances that include:

• The creation, funding, and maintenance of effective, comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation programs in Arizona.

• The proper spending of revenue generated by the Arizona Tobacco Tax Funds (Proposition 303) as prescribed by Arizona Statutes.

• Support and lead the Smoke-Free Arizona campaign to pass a voter initiative in November 2006 that provides a comprehensive clean indoor air law in Arizona.

Asthma
The ALA of Arizona will support state legislation and regulations that provide for:

• Unrestricted access to all medications for children with asthma while at school.

• The implementation of the comprehensive State Asthma Plan in Arizona.

Air Quality
The ALA of Arizona will support State legislation and regulations, as well as local City/County efforts that provide for:

• Strengthening, implementation and strict enforcement of state and Federal Clean Air Acts.

• Outdoor air quality standards, emission controls and jurisdictional/administrative management and enforcement that insure a healthful environment.

• Reduction of air pollution emissions from coal burning power plants.

• Attainment of the federal health-based ambient air quality standards in any metropolitan area that might violate such standards.

• Increased use of renewable energy sources.

• Reduction of diesel emissions from trucks, buses and municipal transit vehicles.

• Tax and other incentives for encouragement of development and use of alternatively fueled motor vehicles.

• Encourage planned growth development that would increase the feasibility of mass transit use and pedestrian friendly communities.

Smoke Free Arizona
Led by the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, Smoke-Free Arizona is an initiative that would prohibit smoking in enclosed public places and places of employment. We are committed to protecting the health of all citizens, especially those who are vulnerable to second hand smoke, including children, seniors and those with existing health problems.
