Tony's House
The homeless population in Maricopa County has a high case rate for TB and can easily spread the disease in a shelter or makeshift housing situations. For this reason, it is imperative that infectious homeless individuals be isolated (usually four to six weeks after beginning treatment) and that the completion of treatment (to avoid drug resistance) be made a public health priority, especially with homeless individuals who can be difficult to find and successfully treat.
The Monroe house is a complex of dedicated one bedroom apartments with separate ventilation and has helped Valley TB patients since 1998.
- Monroe House can house, clothe and feed three TB infected patients for one month for less than it would cost to keep one infected TB patient in the county hospital for one day
- Food is provided by a number of organizations. St. Vincent de Paul provides a daily lunch, weekly food boxes are purchased from St. Mary’s food bank for $20.00 per resident.
- A nurse case manager from county Health Services, provides daily and bi-weekly TB medications to all residents and coordinates medical appointments
- A part-time social worker provides one on one counseling, discharge planning, mental health evaluations and facilitate finding jobs and apartments as needed for each resident.
