Clean Air Blog
Here at the American Lung Association of Arizona, we are trying to highlight good efforts done by people (and cities and counties) that have led to improved air quality. We invite you to share your good efforts and add to the movement! Please send an e-mail to smortenson@lungarizona.org to add your story below:
From Valley Metro:
· 76% of the Valley Metro Mesa fixed route fleet is powered by Compressed Natural Gas or Liquefied Natural Gas.
· In 2007, 8.6 million miles were not traveled EACH DAY due to commuters choosing to ride the bus, carpool telework, and vanpool. This saves 146 tons of pollution each day and 430,000 gallons of gas being consumed EACH DAY.
· Valley Metro will be adding a hybrid bus into its fleet in 2008, and will consider expansion with future bus purchases.
· Emissions are the single largest contributor to ozone pollution—try to telecommute, carpool or ride the bus on an HPA day
· Maricopa County Air Quality Department conducts the "Running Out of Air" campaign to encourage all of us to make small adjustments to our habits that will positively impact the air
· Valley Metro continues to expand bus service -- adding four and expanding two routes this summer to help provide options for Valley residents in saving emissions, as well as money. Metro light rail begins in December 2008—allowing more options for Valley travelers and commuters.
· Remember to limit the use of a gas-powered lawn equipment and eliminate the use of leaf blowers
